Chisholm woman Cynthia Lawrence has been charged and found guilty for multiple offences under the Animal Welfare Act after 156 animals were seized from her residence. The charges included failure to provide adequate food, water, and shelter. Additional charges of failure to take reasonable steps to alleviate pain were also brought before the courts. In February 2015, RSPCA ACT Inspectors attended the Chisholm home after concerns were raised for the welfare of the poultry living in the yard. Upon arrival, the front yard was littered with debris with ducks and chickens sighted roaming through

Lyons Woman Given Lifetime Animal Ownership Ban

Lyons woman Nora Kalolo has been charged just $200 and a lifetime animal ownership ban after she left a dog in her care to die a slow and inhumane death in her backyard. The small Pomeranian Cross was suffering severely from multiple organ disease and advanced stages of renal failure. Inspectors found the dog comatose, extremely thin, sunken eyed and with laboured breathing. Flies and ants were observed on the dog’s body with maggots found in its mouth. The animal was immediately seized and taken to RSPCA ACT for veterinary consultation and had to be euthanised. Observations showed that the

RSPCA ACT Congratulates NSW Government for Greyhound Racing Ban

RSPCA ACT wishes to congratulate the NSW Government for passing legislation late last night with a 49 to 30 vote to ban greyhound racing in NSW. While the ACT Government was unable to prepare similar legislation prior to the coming caretaker period, there is no doubt that the NSW decision will impact the greyhound racing industry in the ACT. RSPCA ACT CEO Tammy Ven Dange stated, "With the new legislation prohibiting racing and training in NSW, we believe that this will have a considerable impact on greyhound racing in the ACT as our estimates believe that about 93% of all participants are

RSPCA ACT: Record Breaking Statistics for Third Year in a Row

For the third year running, RSPCA ACT has recorded yet another record breaking year! The animal welfare figures for 2015/16 demonstrate the organisation’s continued efforts and commitment to improve animal welfare across the Territory. RSPCA ACT has recorded its highest rehoming rates ever across the board with puppy euthanasia at an all-time low with only three of the 243 incoming puppies being euthanised in the last year. Feline euthanasia was also at an record low with rehoming numbers just below 90% and would have been much higher if we did not account for the large number of incoming

250 Frisky Cats Booked So Far for Desexing!

Today, RSPCA ACT and seven local vets have started the second annual “Frisky Tom” campaign. The campaign aims to desex 1,500 cats over a three-year period with the goal of reducing the unwanted cat population in the ACT. RSPCA ACT Chief Executive Tammy Ven Dange emphasised the importance of this campaign, “For the third year in a row, we have seen the number of incoming kittens at the Shelter increase by at least 8% per year. This growth rate is unsustainable, as it will become increasingly difficult to find willing owners. Therefore, the purpose of this three-year program is to try to reverse

RSPCA ACT Disappointed in Canberra Liberals stance on Greyhound Racing Ban

Opposition Leader Jeremy Hanson has stated that the Canberra Liberals would not ban Greyhound Racing in the ACT without an independent inquiry. This announcement comes despite evidence presented by RSPCA ACT to the government showing that over 90% of trainers are NSW based with links to the live baiting scandal amongst other animal welfare concerns. RSPCA ACT CEO Tammy Ven Dange expressed her frustration, "It's really disappointing to see the Canberra Liberals take such a stance for greyhound racing. Such a review will only delay the inevitable as I'm confident it will support the evidence we

Is Your Cat Frisky?

For the second year in a row RSPCA ACT is implementing our ‘Frisky Tom’ campaign. The campaign aims to desex 1,500 cats over a three-year period with the goal of reducing the unwanted cat population in the ACT. Why is this so exciting? RSPCA ACT and participating vet clinics will offer FREE desexing to cat owners who hold a current Centrelink or DVA Gold Card, and live within the ACT or bordering NSW communities including Jerrabomberra, Queanbeyan, Googong and Karabar. Don’t have one of those? No problem! People are still eligible to receive a 20% discount on desexing for their furry friend
