A Historical Milestone for Animal Welfare and Greyhounds: ACT Ban Greyhound Racing

It has just been announced that the ACT Government will follow New South Wale’s lead and ban Greyhound Racing in the Territory.

NSW Premier Mike Baird announced earlier today that the NSW Government would end the practice on the 1st July 2017. All eyes were now on the ACT Government and the future of the industry in the Canberra region.

At 4pm they released a statement declaring their intentions of developing processes to end the practice, “There is no future for this industry in the ACT”.

The Special Commission of Inquiry into the Greyhound Racing Industry in NSW uncovered damning truths of the mistreatment of animals and the complete disregard for their welfare. The Honourable Michael McHugh oversaw the 800-page report detailing the “widespread cruelty” of the industry.

The report found that between 48,000 and 68,000 greyhounds were killed in the past 12 years because they were deemed uncompetitive.

RSPCA ACT CEO Tammy Ven Dange, “This is an important milestone for animal welfare today, particularly for Greyhounds. RSPCA ACT has been calling on the ACT Government to end funding and to ban Greyhound Racing since last year. We are very pleased to see them make this historical decision that is a win for these gentle giants everywhere”.

RSPCA ACT has invited all Greyhounds and their humans to attend a celebration at the Weston shelter at 12pm tomorrow.
