Kids N' Kritters

RSPCA ACT will be running a series of fun, interactive education sessions over the school holidays for youngsters who are interested in learning more about animals. See below for details, class dates and times, and how to book.

All classes are for a 7-13 year age group.

Session times
Monday, Tuesday and Thursday: 9:30am - 3:30pm
Wednesday: 10:30am - 4:30pm

Introduction to RSPCA ACT
(Maximum of 8 participants)
Cost: $150
If you’re new to Kids and Kritters,’ Introduction to RSCPCA ACT’ is the class for you. In the session, we will show you around our shelter, and tell you a little bit about why we do what we do. You will also be able to visit some shelter animals, learn a little about their behaviour and create some enrichment activities for them. Participation in Introduction to Animal Care will earn you your “RSPCA ACT” card to start your collection.
Sessions: Monday 15/4/19

Animal Welfare
(Maximum of 8 participants)
Cost: $150
In this session you will learn about RSPCA’s mission: to prevent cruelty to animals. We will chat about some of the welfare issues that our animals face, and how we can best look after our furry friends. We will investigate the ‘5 Freedoms for Animals’ and you will have an opportunity to help care for a variety of animals at the shelter. You will also earn your “Welfare Warrior” and “Inspectorate” cards!
Sessions: Tuesday 16/4/19

Pet Care
(Maximum of 8 participants)
Cost: $150
In the session, we will cover general aspects of care for all animals at the shelter, as well as some tips for caring for your own pets. You will be able to help out with some of our care tasks here at the shelter such as preparing food, enrichment and setting up areas for animals - and then watching them enjoy what you have created! You will also learn more about cat and dog behaviour, and how we can ‘listen’ to them to make sure that they are happy and healthy. You will receive your ‘Care for Pets’ and ‘Caring for Young Animals’ trading cards.
Sessions: Thursday 18/4/18

Cat Whisperers
(Maximum of 8 participants)
Cost: $150
Are you a crazy cat person? This session is perfect for you! Participants will visit our cattery, and learn how to make friends with cats in a safe and respectful way. We will look at the ways that cats talk to us without using words, so you will be able to know when they are enjoying being patted, or when they would prefer some alone time! You will also have the opportunity to create enrichment items for the cats, and ask our wonderful staff any questions you may have about our feline friends. You will also earn your “Cat Whisperer” and “Small Animals” cards
Sessions: Tuesday 23/4/18

Stay Safe with Dogs
(Maximum of 8 participants)
Cost: $150
Dogs are fantastic, loyal companions, but it is important that we learn to read their body language to keep us, and them, safe! During this session, you will learn how to greet and interact with dogs of all shapes and sizes in a safe and positive way. We will also discuss some things that you can do if you come across a dog that you are not comfortable with. You will learn how to ‘talk’ to dogs, including how to tell them if they are being too jumpy, and how we use rewards to teach our dogs to do the right thing. At the end of the session, you will have earned your ‘Stay safe with Dogs’ and ‘Dog Guru’ trading cards.
Sessions: Wednesday 24/4/19

Please note that while we make every attempt to follow planned programs, there may be some days where children are unable to pat or hold animals. This is due to the nature of our shelter; many of our animals are very timid and are not ready to be handled by a group. Decisions around animal interaction are always made with the welfare of the animal as paramount. All sessions may include visits to other animals around the shelter – please let us know if there are any animals that your child is fearful of.

We endeavour to keep as close to our curriculum as possible, however in the event of bad weather or not having animals suitable for the session we will alter the curriculum slightly and/or utilise staff animals. The session will still be interactive and lots of fun!

Location: 12 Kirkpatrick Street, Weston ACT 2611.

Allergy Information: Please note that while we don’t allow children to bring nuts or nut products into a KnK program, RSPCA ACT is not a nut free environment. Our dogs are sometimes given peanut butter as a treat, and this is stored in our kennels. Please advise staff if your child has a nut allergy.

Please remember:

  • All participants should bring their own labelled drink bottle
  • All participants must wear appropriate clothing, including long pants, enclosed footwear, a hat and sunscreen
  • Participants that attend consecutive sessions should bring a snack or lunch (nut and egg free). RSPCA does not provide food as part of our Kids N Kritters program, but we do have facilities to refill drink bottles.
  • Our schedule includes a supervised lunch break. Quiet activities are available during this time, but some participants prefer to bring along a book to read.

Our session educator and volunteers all hold Working with Vulnerable People cards and have met RSPCA requirements to attend Kids N' Kritters. For this reason parents are welcome to wait in our waiting area for the duration of the session, however are unable to attend the session with their child. Under special circumstances, you may receive permission to attend, however you are required to hold a WWVP card and pay the participant fee in full.
