Session Times Start Finish
Session 1 9:30am 11:30am
Session 2 11:45am 1:45pm
Session 3 2:00pm 4:00pm

Topics for each session vary each day. Please see the booking calendar for more information on specific session topics.

All classes are for a 7-13 year age group.

Pet Care
(Maximum of 8 participants)
Cost: $60
In the session, we will cover general aspects of care for all animals at the shelter, as well as some tips for caring for your own pets. You will be able to help out with some of our care tasks here at the shelter such as preparing food, enrichment and setting up areas for animals - and then watching them enjoy what you have created! You will receive your ‘Care for Pets’ and ‘Caring for Young Animals’ trading cards.

Enrichment for Shelter Animals
(Maximum of 8 participants)
Cost: $60
This is probably our animals’ favourite session! Enrichment is so important for them, as it provides opportunities to use their natural instincts and behaviours, overcome fears and learn to trust humans. It also makes their day a lot more interesting! Participants will learn about the enrichments we use daily here at the shelter, and then create enrichment activities for dogs, cats, birds and rabbits. We will also spend some time socialising our kittens and puppies; this can include patting, playing or talking to the animals. You will also receive your ‘Cat Enrichment’ and ‘Dog Enrichment’ trading cards!

All About Adoptions
(Maximum of 8 participants)
Cost: $60
All About Adoptions is a brand new Kids ‘n’ Kritters session! On the day, participants will enjoy a tour of the shelter and the chance to get to know our dogs, rabbits, cats and birds. You will learn about our adoption process, from when an animal comes in to the shelter right through to when they walk out with their new forever family! You will also have the chance to help out with some enrichment to keep the animals busy and happy, observe animal behaviour and create some adoption profiles that may very well be the thing that gets an animal adopted. After the session, you will have earned your ‘Adoptions Expert’ and ‘RSPCA ACT’ trading cards.

Cat Whisperers
(Maximum of 8 participants)
Cost: $60
Are you a crazy cat person? This session is perfect for you! Participants will visit our cattery, and learn how to make friends with cats in a safe and respectful way. We will look at the ways that cats talk to us without using words, so you will be able to know when they are enjoying being patted, or when they would prefer some alone time! You will also have the opportunity to create enrichment items for the cats, and ask our wonderful staff any questions you may have about our feline friends. You will also earn your “Cat Whisperer” and “Small Animals” cards

Stay Safe with Dogs
(Maximum of 8 participants)
Cost: $60
Dogs are fantastic, loyal companions, but it is important that we learn to read their body language to keep us, and them, safe! During this session, you will learn how to greet and interact with dogs of all shapes and sizes in a safe and positive way. We will also discuss some things that you can do if you come across a dog that you are not comfortable with. You will learn how to ‘talk’ to dogs, including how to tell them if they are being too jumpy, and how we use rewards to teach our dogs to do the right thing. At the end of the session, you will have earned your ‘Stay safe with Dogs’ and ‘Dog Guru’ trading cards.

Important Information

Please note that while we make every attempt to follow planned programs, there may be some days where children are unable to pat or hold animals. This is due to the nature of our shelter; many of our animals are very timid and are not ready to be handled by a group. Decisions around animal interaction are always made with the welfare of the animal as paramount. All sessions may include visits to other animals around the shelter – please let us know if there are any animals that your child is fearful of or inexperienced with.

We endeavour to keep as close to our curriculum as possible, however in the event of bad weather or not having animals suitable for the session we will alter the curriculum slightly and/or utilise staff animals. The session will still be interactive and lots of fun!

Location: 12 Kirkpatrick Street, Weston ACT 2611.

Allergy Information: Please note that while we don’t allow children to bring nuts or nut products into a KnK program, RSPCA ACT is not a nut free environment. Our dogs are sometimes given peanut butter as a treat, and this is stored in our kennels. Please advise staff if your child has a nut allergy.

What to Bring on the Day:

  • All participants should bring their own labelled drink bottle
  • All participants must wear appropriate clothing, including long pants, enclosed footwear, a hat and sunscreen
  • Participants staying for multiple sessions should bring a snack and lunch (nut and egg free please). RSPCA does not provide food as part of our Kids n Kritters program, but we do have facilities to refill drink bottles.

When you arrive for your session, please see reception staff. They will be able to show you where to sign in and place your belongings.

Our session educator and volunteers all hold Working with Vulnerable People cards and have met RSPCA requirements to attend Kids N' Kritters. For this reason parents are welcome to wait in our waiting area for the duration of the session, however are unable to attend the session with their child. Under special circumstances, you may receive permission to attend, however you are required to hold a WWVP card and pay the participant fee in full.
