Million Paws Walk: Walk This May Starts Friday!

The countdown is on and we’re only days away. This Friday marks the start of Million Paws Walk: Walk this May! We hope that dogs around Canberra are fluffing their coats while the humans are putting on their active wear to grab the lead and practice their socially distant walks for a good cause. RSPCA ACT CEO Michelle Robertson looks forward to seeing Canberrans getting behind this virtual event throughout the month of May. “Like so many other pet owners, I have derived much comfort from my pooches over the recent challenging months. Unfortunately, not every animal in the ACT receives the care

Winter is coming... Cool tips to care for your pet in the colder months

The cold weather is upon us and despite many of our pets having fur coats they can still suffer from frostbite, exposure and dehydration in the winter months. To help our pets get through the colder months, we’ve put together some helpful tips! Keep your animals inside as much as possible. While you’ll still have to take your dogs for walks and your cat might not be too impressed, keeping them inside especially during the coldest parts of the day is ideal. Make sure to dry your pet when they come in from outside. You wouldn’t want to sit in a wet coat and neither does your best friend! If your

RSPCA launches Million Paws Walk: Walk This Way

In response to COVID-19, RSPCA will no longer be able to hold our most successful public event, The Million Paws Walk, on Sunday 17 May. RSPCA teams around the country have put heads together to find an alternative way for us to still celebrate our mutual love for pooches this May. After all, it is a favourite day of the year and so very important for animal welfare! This year’s event has evolved into Million Paws Walk: Walk This May. Participants are encouraged to don their workout gear for the month of May, grab the leash and fundraise while walking with purpose in their own backyards (or

RSPCA Aims to ‘Clear the Shelter’ This Weekend

RSPCA ACT is aiming to clear the shelter this Friday and Saturday (21 and 22 February) with animals being available for adoption at a heavily discounted fee of $29. Last year, 108 animals that were available for adoption found their forever homes. ‘Clear the Shelter’ is a national RSPCA initiative and shelters in VIC, SA, ACT, NSW, NT, WA and QLD are all participating. RSPCA ACT CEO Michelle Robertson has high hopes that all the animals available for adoption this weekend will find their forever homes. “At the RSPCA in the ACT, we currently have over 300 animals in our care, of which we expect

24 hour dollar matching can help vulnerable animals find a home

On the eve of World Animal Day, the RSPCA has created a special opportunity for members of the public to watch their donations grow as they assist to make the world a better place for all animals. Donations made to RSPCA ACT could be quadrupled this Thursday, 3 October via dollar matching made possible by generous corporate partners and major donors. RSPCA shelters across Australia care for more than 123,000 vulnerable neglected, unwanted, abandoned or abused animals every year and is placing a spotlight on the need to find furever homes. RSPCA ACT CEO Michelle Robertson said that “every

RSPCA ACT welcomes passing of new Animal Welfare Laws

RSPCA ACT welcomes the passing of the Animal Welfare Legislation Amendment Bill 2019 which was debated in the Legislative Assembly Today. RSPCA ACT CEO Michelle Robertson said that the organisation is in favour of many amendments in the bill, and she thanked the members of the Assembly for their support towards continuous improvement in animal welfare outcomes. “The team at the RSPCA ACT want to see the absence of cruelty to animals. We need strong laws to help protect animals and to deter animal cruelty. We also need strong sentencing to be passed down for animal cruelty offences that will

RSPCA ACT Supports new Bill with pets to be recognised as sentient beings in Canberra

RSPCA ACT has provided significant input into the Bill and we are very encouraged by the ACT Governments push to have animals recognised as sentient beings. The RSPCA in the ACT believes that most Canberrans are responsible and loving pet owners, and foresee very little impact that the proposed changes to the Animal Welfare Legislation will have on them on a daily basis. The proposed changes could, however, have a significant impact on pet owners who continuously do the wrong thing. The RSPCA ACT Inspectorate’s ability to take punitive and corrective measures will also be strengthened by a
