RSPCA ACT is aiming to clear the shelter this Friday and Saturday (21 and 22 February) with animals being available for adoption at a heavily discounted fee of $29.
Last year, 108 animals that were available for adoption found their forever homes.
‘Clear the Shelter’ is a national RSPCA initiative and shelters in VIC, SA, ACT, NSW, NT, WA and QLD are all participating.
RSPCA ACT CEO Michelle Robertson has high hopes that all the animals available for adoption this weekend will find their forever homes.
“At the RSPCA in the ACT, we currently have over 300 animals in our care, of which we expect around 50 to 80 will be ready to be adopted come Friday.”
This includes a number of kittens, dogs, cats, rabbits and some birds.
“We have a significant number of cats and rabbits available for adoption. The Shelter team would be especially delighted if they have the opportunity to be matched with their perfect new family this weekend and hop out of here.”
All animals will be desexed and microchipped, have had their vaccinations and veterinary checks. Our usual screening and adoption procedure will apply to ensure matching the right animal with the right homes. Please, if you are renting, obtain permission in writing from your landlord.
The Weston Shelter has been at capacity since December. Contributing factors to capacity constraints include unplanned closures over December/January from bushfire smoke impact, a significant increase in animal welfare complaints, seasonal trends and a delayed start to the ‘kitten season’.
RSPCA ACT is encouraging Canberrans who are interested in adding a member to their family to come and adopt during this period.
“Adopting is a great way to give a cat, dog or a rabbit a second chance by providing a loving forever home. Animals are great companions and make us better people!”

Please note that the Shelter will close early on Thursday, 20 February. If you have your heart set on a particular animal already, you may want to consider adopting before the promotion commences.
