Get the flock out of here! ‘Chris the Sheep’ has his own book!

IT'S COMING.... Since his infamous entrance into the limelight in 2015, ‘Chris the Sheep’ has continued to bewilder and amaze people around the world. Who knew an innocent tweet could thrust a single lost sheep onto the world stage? He's been reported by media outlets in just about every country you could name and has been featured on well-known news services and networks such as CNN, NBC, BBC, National Geographic, Huffington Post, and more! But this time, he’s making an appearance as the illustrated star of RSPCA ACT’s first children’s book, ‘The Misadventures of Chris the Sheep’. Of the

A Face that can Kill – When Breeds Need More than Unconditional Love

Australian Bull Dog with breathing issues
On the 25th February, an eight-year old Australian Bulldog named Jaxon was surrendered to RSPCA ACT. Like so many other dogs of his breed, he came to us with significant health issues related to his exaggerated features. In order for him to live a healthy and longer life, our vet team would have to perform significant surgery just to help him breath. In Jaxon’s case, his teeth are overcrowded and the soft palate was too loose and floppy to allow for adequate air flow resulting in a daily struggle, much like a person with chronic asthma. Jaxon’s story is not unusual unfortunately. Turn on any

Breed Specific Legislation Doesn’t Work

Happy Relaxed Pitbull laying on a garden path he has a big pink tongue and a blue grey coat and soft kind eyes
There has been a lot of talk lately about Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) for dogs after a number of horrific attacks locally. The entire community including RSPCA ACT has a desire to see a reduction and prevention in dog attacks from occurring. However, using legislation in this manner has proven to be ineffective in reducing dog attacks. What exactly is BSL? It’s the restriction of specific breeds or cross breeds of dogs regardless of their behaviour. The only form of BSL that the Australian Capital Territory has in place right now is for greyhounds which are required to wear muzzles until

Pet Pool and Beach Safety

Finn the little dog is wearing his life jacket and he is ready for a swim
Summer is well and truly here and many people are already planning their holidays! If you plan to bring your furry companion along with you there are things you should consider. Here are our top tips to ensure that your holiday is everything to remember – for the right reasons! 1. Pet-Friendly? Make sure wherever you’re going allows animals. Some beaches and campsites that normally allow them may have different rules during the busy holiday period. Give them a phone call and do your research. 2. Make sure your pet can swim: When it comes to dogs, some breeds are instinctively comfortable in

Home for the Holidays: $99 for any adult dog or cat!

RSPCA ACT is currently bursting at the seams with cats and dogs desperately seeking a happy and loving home for the holidays and beyond. To help them find their Christmas miracle, our Weston Shelter is reducing the adoption fee from tomorrow for ALL ADULT cats and dogs to $99 until Christmas Eve. RSPCA ACT CEO Tammy Ven Dange shared her Christmas wish, “We have a number of animals that have been waiting at the Shelter for more than two hundred days. All I want for Christmas this year is to ensure that these pets can share this holiday season with their new families. Come on Canberra! Bring

RSPCA ACT Disappointed in Canberra Liberals stance on Greyhound Racing Ban

Opposition Leader Jeremy Hanson has stated that the Canberra Liberals would not ban Greyhound Racing in the ACT without an independent inquiry. This announcement comes despite evidence presented by RSPCA ACT to the government showing that over 90% of trainers are NSW based with links to the live baiting scandal amongst other animal welfare concerns. RSPCA ACT CEO Tammy Ven Dange expressed her frustration, "It's really disappointing to see the Canberra Liberals take such a stance for greyhound racing. Such a review will only delay the inevitable as I'm confident it will support the evidence we

Is Your Cat Frisky?

For the second year in a row RSPCA ACT is implementing our ‘Frisky Tom’ campaign. The campaign aims to desex 1,500 cats over a three-year period with the goal of reducing the unwanted cat population in the ACT. Why is this so exciting? RSPCA ACT and participating vet clinics will offer FREE desexing to cat owners who hold a current Centrelink or DVA Gold Card, and live within the ACT or bordering NSW communities including Jerrabomberra, Queanbeyan, Googong and Karabar. Don’t have one of those? No problem! People are still eligible to receive a 20% discount on desexing for their furry friend

A Historical Milestone for Animal Welfare and Greyhounds: ACT Ban Greyhound Racing

It has just been announced that the ACT Government will follow New South Wale’s lead and ban Greyhound Racing in the Territory. NSW Premier Mike Baird announced earlier today that the NSW Government would end the practice on the 1st July 2017. All eyes were now on the ACT Government and the future of the industry in the Canberra region. At 4pm they released a statement declaring their intentions of developing processes to end the practice, “There is no future for this industry in the ACT”. The Special Commission of Inquiry into the Greyhound Racing Industry in NSW uncovered damning truths of
