IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Animal Interaction & Welfare

Due to the nature of our shelter, there may be days when children are unable to interact with certain animals. Many of the animals in our care are timid, in recovery, or simply not ready to be handled by a group.

All decisions regarding animal interaction are made with the animal’s welfare as our highest priority.

Each session may also include visits to various animals around the shelter. If your child has any fears, allergies, or limited experience with certain types of animals, please let us know in advance so we can support them appropriately.

Program Changes & Weather

We endeavour to keep as close to our planned curriculum as possible.

However, in the event of bad weather or if there are no animals suitable for handling on the day, we may adjust the session and/or utilise staff animals.

With these changes, the session will remain interactive, engaging and fun.

Allergy Information

While we do not allow children to bring nuts or nut products into our School Holiday Programs, RSPCA ACT is not a nut-free environment.

Our dogs are sometimes given peanut butter as a treat, and this is stored in our kennels.

Please advise staff if your child has a nut allergy so we can take appropriate precautions.

What to Bring on the Day

All participants should bring:

  • A labelled drink bottle
  • Appropriate clothing, including long pants and enclosed footwear
  • A hat and sunscreen

Children without long pants or enclosed shoes will not be able to attend the session.

For 4-hour sessions: Participants must bring a snack and lunch (nut-free). RSPCA ACT does not provide food as part of the program, but we do have facilities to refill drink bottles.

For 2-hour sessions: Snacks are encouraged.

About Our Educators & Supervision

All RSPCA ACT educators and volunteers all hold valid Working With Vulnerable People (WWVP) cards and meet all RSPCA ACT requirements for delivering these programs.

Your child will always be supervised by trained and approved personnel throughout the session.

Parents are welcome to remain in our waiting area during the program. In special circumstances, permission may be granted for a parent to attend the session.

Parents attending a session must hold a current WWVP card and pay the full participant fee.
