Community steps up to revamp animal shelter

Through May and June this year about 30-40% more dogs, more puppies, more cats arrived at our shelter than during the same period last year. We’ve noticed the length of stays with complicated requirements have extended as well. Our Shelter is operating at or over capacity on most days.

We were thrilled earlier last month with the response we received after we put out a call out asking for financial help to allow us to reinvigorate a dilapidated part of our Shelter. We desperately needed to create more space and needed to think outside of the square to make it happen.

We asked for support and the community responded, once again proving that Canberra is not only an animal loving community but also a community who supports what we’re trying to achieve.

The renovation work, which included installing new flooring, heating lamps, carpets and more secure enclosures, was a success and practically within days six cats were transported from living in tiny cages to living in more spacious outdoor enclosures.

We are incredibly proud of what our staff achieve in animal welfare despite the outdated facilities we operate within and this recent renovation appeal warmed hearts to know we are not alone.
