Boss arrived at the shelter as a two-year-old stray with a fractured leg. Upon arrival he was in pain, was very timid and unsure of people and his surroundings.

Fast-forward one year and Boss is a friendly, approachable, walkable and loving dog who unfortunately has now lived one-third of his existence at the RSPCA ACT shelter.

CEO Michelle Robertson said staff and volunteers have grown very fond of Boss and helped transform a once-timid boy into what should be a great family pet.  The RSCPA ACT team has their fingers tightly crossed that Boss’ perfect person or family will be arriving at the shelter soon to adopt him.

“Boss is a great dog. He likes people and whatever misconceptions may exist about animals who spend a long time in an animal shelter, Boss is not it,” she said.

“What he needs is a dog lover. A person or a family who can accept there’s bound to be an adjustment period but one who realizes that if Boss can become a friendly and approachable pet in the loud and busy environment of an animal shelter, imagine how good he’ll be in a settled, loving family home.”

Boss’s unenviable milestone may be the first of many in the coming months as the Weston shelter is currently home to multiple adult, ‘long term’ dogs who are desperate to find a new home.

Merida, a pretty American Staffordshire Bull Terrier has spent the past 293 days in care, Lahni, a mixed breed girl has been at the shelter 280 days, Indi, a fun Bull Arab 244 days, another attractive American Staffordshire Terrier named Millie for 182 days. There are multiple other adult dogs who have been with RSPCA ACT for over 100 days.

According to Michelle a few years ago only one or two dogs at the shelter would be considered ‘long-term’ residents. “Sady, these days we have at least five at any given time.’.

“It many cases we don’t know why they’ve ended up here, but we know that under our care they have the best chance at healing and finding that perfect, forever home.  It is just taking much, much longer than what any of us would like.” she said.

RSPCA ACT shelter is open Monday-Saturday with animal viewing times 10am-3pm daily, except on the first Wednesday of each Month where the Shelter is closed. No appointment is required.
